Baseball & The ER
What a day - I had to share because it was truly one of those "never in a million year" type days. It started off as a normal long weekend. We went to the Matthews festival and enjoyed a parade.
with lots of marching bands....
The Wells Fargo wagon and horses....
Snoopy from Carowinds!.....
And as I always say, it isn't a parade without Homer....
Meet a "transformer".....
and get a hug from Homer....
On Friday night we had tried to attend a Charlotte Knights game. Some of you know that we are lucky enough to have a AAA team (White Sox) only 5 minutes from my house. After only 2 innings, a terrible storm blew in and the game was suspended. So we exchanged our tickets for Saturday night (so keep in mind we were never supposed to attend Saturday's game).
I was told if I took a nap I could stay at the game as long as I wanted as a special treat because it was the last Knights game of the year. I took my first nap in almost a year (this becomes important later).
Saturday night we arrived and watched the end of Friday's game (Knights won!). During the time while they prepped for the second game, Mommy and I walked around. I saw a lot of people writing and I asked if I could do it. Mommy explained it was a contest and I wasn't old enough but we could enter Daddy. So we wrote Daddy's name on a piece of paper and stuck it in the box - we chose Daddy's name because 1) he loves baseball and 2) he is lucky with contests (he won me Elmo on stage tickets two years ago).
During the game they announced at the end of the third inning they would be drawing names for a chance to win tickets to the World Series (yes, I said World Series). I really wanted to stay to watch "the contest" on the field. Mommy said there wouldn't be a contest. They would just pull names out of a box. Well at the end of the 3rd inning they called out 8 names....Dean Hare was the 7th name called! I was SOOOOOOO excited.
Daddy disappeared for 2 innings and came back to tell us they had to take a quiz. The top 2 people would be going down on the field for a shoot-out of some type. Mommy said she expected Daddy to do well on the quiz because sometimes she jokes that he can remember everything about sports and yet still forgets to buy milk!
Well sure enough...Daddy was one of the top 2! For all my New England friends, you'll be interested to hear that the Red Sox was one of the 7 questions asked. Here is the quiz - how would you do?
Right before heading down to the field I was so excited that I slipped. I banged my chin on a railing (Mommy thinks they heard the sound on the field) and blood started pouring out. Mommy rushed me over to the first aid station and I kept saying "I just want to see my Daddy on the field...." The EMT woman was very confused as to why my Daddy would be going on the field. She gave me a bag of ice and put a bandaid over my cut. But she warned mommy I might need a stitch or two. A really nice man from the Knights waited for us and rushed us down to the field.
I couldn't believe that I was getting to walk under the stadium. As we walked down I asked if "this was where Homer hung out". We got to the end of the ramp and THERE WAS HOMER! (and Daddy of course). I got to stand next to Homer, saw him stretching, and see the end of the game from the same place Homer always runs out of.
Watching the end of the game....
I can't believe it's Homer!....
Heading out to the field!....
Now remember - I had just had a tramatic injury (well tramatic to my parents) so my Mommy was very frazzled - she wishes she had taken a video of our entire time on the field, but at least she caught a few shots....
There was a coin toss - Daddy won and chose to go first. Daddy says there were a lot of hecklers in the stands. He was VERY nervous standing out there with an almost sold out crowd! The other guy seemed to have a lot of supporters.
The second try (after this shot they made me stand even further away to ensure I didn't get a second injury!)....
The fourth try....
Daddy's fifth and final shot....
OH MY - IT WENT IN!!!!!!!!!!!! (mommy unfortunately shut off the camera in her excitement) The other guy missed again. DADDY WON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I couldn't believe it!!!! Yes - my daddy won a trip to see the World Series. For a baseball lover there isn't anything better.
So please route for a Red Sox world series because that will just be the icing on the cake. Thankfully - I was just excited by the whole night and do not seem to realize that I will be missing out on the actual world series. At four, a sleepover with Gramma & Grampa is just as exciting!
We had to rush off the field before they started the fireworks. Remember - I HATE fireworks - the original plan for the evening was that we were to leave when I got tired or in the 8th inning to avoid the fireworks. I was a trooper and held my hands over my ears.
In a state of shock, we then called my doctor's 24 hotline and sent a frantic text to one of mommy's friends who is a nurse to see about my chin. Because it was still bleeding we were advised to go to the ER.
So off we went (yes, on a holiday weekend we went to an ER). Since this was my first time going to the hospital we opted for the children's ER in the downtown hospital The ER was VERY busy (we later learned one of their worst nights in a long time) so we had to wait FOUR hours before getting treated. I was a TROOPER. No one would have guessed I had an injury. I charmed all the nurses ("you are so cute" was said over and over) and happily played with my Leapster and mommy's itouch. Everyone seemed to wonder how I got hurt at 11pm at a Knights game - but really - it is quite an unbelievable story isn't it?! My parents said NUMEROUS times how glad they were that I had a nap - it sure made the night a lot easier to deal with.
Waiting in the lobby - I look awfully awake for 3am don't I?!....
I finally gave in to sleep when we were taken back and I lay down.....
I was able to just get "super glue" instead of stitches so my memory of my hospital visit will be a positive one and really all I will remember is "I got to play games on mommy's itouch." It is pretty amazing that we made it 4 1/2 years before my first ER visit. I have to avoid the pool and baths for 10 days (just like stitches) but the glue is so much less traumatic! We got home just as the sun was rising and we were all asleep within 5 minutes. I slept in until 1pm today when my parents woke me up in fear that I won't fall asleep tonight. Today's grand plan is to rent the movie Rio and try not to be too crabby to each other.
So that's my story - what a pretty incredible day for all of us. Hopefully now that I am on the mend Daddy can take the time to really enjoy this unbelievable win.

After the parade I got to enjoy a few rides...

- Who hasn't won a world series since 1908?
- How many world championships have the Red Sox won?
- Who won the world series last year?
- Whose won the most world series championships? (I booed when Daddy told me the answer)?
- Who is the only former Charlotte Knight to win a world series MVP?
- How do they determine home field advantage in the baseball playoffs?
Right before heading down to the field I was so excited that I slipped. I banged my chin on a railing (Mommy thinks they heard the sound on the field) and blood started pouring out. Daddy went onto the field and I got to stand there and watch him! He and the other man were going to get 5 chances to throw a ball in a small net. Whoever got the most in the net would win. They had to stand on the pitcher's mound and it looked REALLY far.
Here they shake hands as they get ready....
